Traveling to Tofino, BC
Tofino, on the Western Coast of Vancouver Island is a
haven for surfing, fishing, storm-watching and just getting away from the big
city. However travelling to Tofino from Vancouver can be a time-consuming and
stressful experience.
Driving from Vancouver to Tofino first
involves the line-ups and cost of BC Ferries, currently $73.50 each way for a
vehicle with 2 passengers.
After the 90 minute ferry crossing you then have a
4 hour drive across the Island from either Nanaimo or 5 hours from Victoria, giving
you a total travel time of 6 to 8+ hours depending on weather and road
conditions. (Note: Snow tires and chains are strongly recommended for winter
travel as you will have to cross 2 mountain passes that can experience severe
winter driving conditions)
Another option is to travel to Tofino by bus, but
they also estimate a travel time of 7-8 hours and cost $50-65 each way.
